Bio: |
Jonathan and Valerie Nicklow both grew up outside of Washington, D.C., spending their early years at all of the national museums and art galleries. Jonathan attended Savannah College of Art & Design receiving a B.F.A. in painting. Valerie attended the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore where she received a B.F.A. in general sculpture studies. They met each other at a book store outside of Baltimore and married in 1996. Not long after moving to Colorado and building their live in studio in Evergreen they started working collaboratively. Using a process they have developed, they created oil paintings on low relief ceramic slabs and sculpture. Originating from the ceramic work, using carved linoleum blocks in clay, Jonathan began a body of art involving relief printing on paper and using Valerie's prior experience as an artist assistant to a clothing designer they are exploring the possibilities of printmaking on fabric and paper, working in both 2-D art and soft sculpture. They have participated in numerous national gallery and museum shows and outdoor art festivals across the country receiving many honors including several best of show awards. Their artwork has appeared in numerous magazines and books including most recently in "500 Tiles" by Lark Books. Their work is in many private and public collections including an intaglio print in the Smithsonian Institution. They have also conducted workshops and guest lectures in art schools, colleges and universities around the country. Jonathan is now currently enrolled in the graduate printmaking program at the University of Colorado, Boulder.
